Proud Parents: Tiffany and Michael Deal

From the point of view of the father, Michael:

Lakesanne's birth was long— 36 hours. HypnoBirthing® tools helped us achieve the safe, calm, natural birth we wanted.

The Tuesday before Lakesanne's birth, March 23, around 10 p.m., we were admitted to Scripps Encinitas Hospital because Tiffany's surges were 3 to 4 minutes apart and 2 cm. dilated. By noon the next day, though, labor had stalled; so we went home to wait and deepen Tiffany's relaxation. We played music, listened to our HypnoBirthing® relaxation CD, and read HypnoBirthing® scripts. Tiffany also liked sitting on the birth ball while I massaged her. We tried nipple stimulation, too, hoping it would help labor progress.

By 9 p.m. on that Wednesday, Tiffany's labor seemed to be progressing, so we went back to the hospital. We were so tired, but knew that waiting and relaxing was all we could do. Lakesanne was not in distress and there weren't any complications with the birth. The nurse suggested rupturing Tiffany's membranes when she was 8 cm. to help labor progress. I'm not sure if this helped. Transition phase lasted about two hours. The transition phase was intense and we wondered if Lakesanne would ever come out. Amazingly, Tiffany used her breathing and relaxed as best she could without any drugs. The perineal massage she had done in advance really paid off. The perineum did not tear at all. There was only one tiny vaginal tear that required one stich.

What a joy it was when Lakesanne's head finally emerged! She was finally out by 9:40 a.m. on Thursday, March 25. I cut the umbilical cord. She cried a little and then seemed at peace. She was very alert, looking around, making eye contact and smiling. Tiffany walked on her own to the recovery room. We all slept a lot that first day.

Of course we wish the birth would have been shorter, but there isn't anything about our birthing experience we would change. Dr. Truong and the hospital staff were so supportive and respectful of our birth plan. We are thankful that HypnoBirthing® gave us the gentle birth we wanted.
